Jos, Dec 18, 2025 (NAN) The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Plateau Specialist Hospital, Prof. Christopher Yilgwan, says a bill seeking to upgrade the hospital to a teaching hospital has been submitted to the Plateau State House of Assembly.

Yilgwan made the disclosure on Thursday in Jos at the hospital’s 2025 end-of-year get-together and retirees’ award night.

The CMD described the move as a major step toward strengthening medical education, research, and healthcare delivery on the Plateau.

According to him, the proposed upgrade would enable the hospital to train medical students and other health professionals and improve specialist services and partnerships.

“The upgrade is expected to position the Plateau Specialist Hospital as a key centre for medical training and advanced healthcare.

“The transformation of the hospital into a teaching hospital would enhance the quality of healthcare services available to residents of the state and the nation at large,” he said.

He further said that the hospital, in 2025, moved into its state-of-the-art medical laboratory, and the laboratory had transformed the services and quality of care the hospital provides.

Yilgwan also said that the hospital was transiting from the paper to electronic record system, and it had also signed two memoranda of understanding with two research centres in the United States of America that would help improve its research capacity.

He commended the staff of the hospital for their dedication and service and also praised the retirees for their years of selfless contribution to the institution.

Similarly, Plateau’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Barnabas Baam’long, described the event as significant, noting that it was an opportunity to celebrate the hospital staff for the efficient discharge of their duties.

Baamlong urged the staff to brace themselves for the hospital’s transition to a teaching hospital, stressing the need for greater commitment, professionalism, and readiness to meet the demands of a teaching hospital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 31 retirees were awarded, and two staff were also awarded for their outstanding performance. (NAN) (http://www.nannews.ng)
