Delta emphasises professional competence in successful, quality project delivery

Asaba, Jan. 6, 2026 (NAN) Delta Government says it is placing emphasis on professional competence and hands-on supervision as critical factors for successful, quality project delivery in the state.
The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Mr Reuben Izeze, disclosed this, on Tuesday, during a meeting with zonal and superintendent engineers in Asaba.
Izeze underscored the need for engineers to continually update their skills, in response to evolving engineering standards and technologies.
According to him, modern infrastructure demands professionals, who are familiar with current innovations, global benchmarks and efficient construction methods.
He, therefore, admonished them not to continue to rely on outdated practices, pointing out that “rapidly changing nature of engineering makes ongoing training not just desirable but essential”.
The commissioner said that Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration was determined to ensure that public funds translate into durable, safe and cost-effective infrastructure.
He said that the governor’s objective could only be achieved through a well-trained and disciplined technical workforce.
He linked the approach directly to the state government’s MORE Agenda which, he said, prioritised meaningful development outcomes and prudent resource management.
Izeze also drew attention to the importance of proper project monitoring, advising engineers to “physically inspect construction sites, instead of depending solely on digital tools, such as GPS reports”.
He said that “on-site presence” allows for better assessment of workmanship, compliance with specifications and early detection of potential issues.
He urged the engineering teams to remain focused on meeting completion timelines, particularly in view of the heightened public expectations that typically accompany every election season.
The commissioner also addressed staff welfare, saying that a supportive work environment plays a major role in boosting morale and productivity.
He assured the ministry staff that excellence and commitment would be recognised and supported by the leadership.
Izeze, who emphasised that learning should go hand in hand with daily responsibilities, said that regular training and retraining were vital for maintaining relevance in the profession.
