Lafia, Dec. 10, 2025 (NAN) Wife of Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Salifat Sule, has called for tougher penalties against perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to serve as a deterrent to others.
She made the call on Wednesday in Lafia during a road walk organised as part of activities marking the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.
The road walk, organised by the Nasarawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, commenced at the ministry and terminated at the Government House where participants were received by Gov. Abdullahi Sule.
The governor’s wife described women as “special beings created by God,” who should be treated with love, care, and compassion.
She expressed concern over the rising cases of violence against women and girls and advocated stringent punitive measures against offenders to curb the trend.
She thanked the governor for initiatives aimed at empowering women and protecting their rights, and assured that her office would continue to intensify sensitisation on the dangers and consequences of GBV.
The governor’s wife also urged stakeholders to actively support the campaign against GBV and speak out wherever cases occur.
Also speaking, Mrs Hauwa Jugbo, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, urged victims and their families to report cases promptly to enable authorities take action against perpetrators.
She commended the governor for his commitment to women’s empowerment and for ensuring that GBV victims receive adequate support.
Receiving the participants, Gov. Sule applauded the resilience of women in promoting peace and development, and reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding their rights.
He pledged to continue empowering women through appointments into strategic positions to enhance their contribution to the development of the state and the nation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
