Lagos, Dec. 18, 2025 (NAN) The Lions Club in Egbeda Lagos State, on Thursday, donated groceries to Prime Care Rehabilitation and Elderly Care Home in Akowonjo, as part of its humanitarian activities in society.
Speaking during the visit, President of the club’s district 404B3, Mrs Ijeoma Udeh, said that the donation is in line with the objectives of Lions Clubs International, which focuses on eight global causes.
She listed the causes as: childhood cancer, diabetes, disaster relief, environment, humanitarian efforts, hunger, vision and youth.
Udeh said that the visit is aimed at supporting elderly persons, many of whom have been abandoned in spite of their contributions to their families and society.
She noted members of the club had carried out a needs assessment at the elderly home, to understand its most urgent requirements.
“The government cannot do everything alone that is why organisations like ours must support homes like this,” she said.
According to her, the donated items included bags of rice, beans, spaghetti, noodles, semovita, vegetable oil, toilet tissue, disinfectant, detergent and dietary supplements.
Udeh added that the club will carry out a larger hunger relief outreach in January, targeting a wider community as part of the club’s International hunger relief week.
Meanwhile, in his response, the Principal Funder of Prime Care Rehabilitation and Elderly Care Home, Dr Abolade Adedola, expressed gratitude to the Lions Club, for its gesture.
He said that the donation will greatly support the home, especially at a time of economic hardship.
“We are happy and grateful that they remembered the elderly; It takes people with large hearts to care for old people, especially in this economy,” he said.
Adedola noted that the donations to the home were not frequent and mostly came from individuals celebrating special occasions or from non-governmental organisations.
He urged members of the public, especially leaders and well-meaning Nigerians, to show more concern for the elderly by supporting homes that cater for them.
Besides, he called on government to increase awareness on elderly care and support initiatives that protects old people in society.
Adedola thanked the Lions Club for its regular visit and support to the home.
He prayed for members of the club, and urged Nigerians to start preparing early for old age, adding that caring for the elderly should be a shared responsibility.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Prime Care Rehabilitation and Elderly Care Home, caters for elderly people, some of whom are abandoned or face health challenges.
NAN also reports that the cost of maintenance of these aged people are subsidised through donations and support from good spirited individuals and organisations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
