Uyo, Dec. 18, 2025 (NAN) The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL), on Thursday, donated a solar-powered borehole facility to the Uyo custodial centre.
Speaking during the donation, the Chairman, Dr Uju Agomoh, said that the water facility was the organisation’s way of promoting the welfare of the inmates.
Agomoh further said that the water facility would help to alleviate the challenge of water supply being faced by inmates at the center.
She used the occasion to pledge the willingness of the association to give free legal services to 115 inmates at the correctional facility.
The NBA-SPIDEL helmsman further said that the organisation’s intervention followed a request made by the centre during a visit on Dec. 1.
“‘This request was made when we visited this facility during our week-long conference here in Akwa Ibom. Water was mentioned as a major challenge.
”We also found out that electricity was the major cause of the water challenge, so we sought a permanent solution by providing this solar-powered borehole,” she said.
Agomoh urged authorities of the centre, and the inmates to ensure proper management of the project to ensure optimal utility.
In his remarks, the Controller, NCoS Command in Akwa Ibom, Mr Theophilus Okoka, commended the body for the gesture, describing as “timely and well-intended”
Okoka said that water was an essential need, and that its critical role in improving hygiene and the overall welfare of the inmates could not be overemphasised.
The NCoS official described the water facility as a fulfilment of promise, saying,” this solar-powered borehole is dear to our hearts”
“The facility will significantly ease the challenges associated with water scarcity, reduce operational stress, and enhance living conditions within this facility,” he said.
He urged other stakeholders to emulate NBA-SPIDEL’s gesture by supporting the facility in any way possible.
Earlier, the Officer-in-charge of Uyo Custodial Centre, Dr Ezekiel Inyang, commended the organisation for the gesture, and pledged the centre’s commitment to ensuring good maintenance culture in its usage. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
