Volleyball: Sunshine Spikers edge out NAF Rockets 3–1

Abuja, Dec. 10, 2025 (NAN) Sunshine Spikers men’s Volleyball Club of Akure on Wednesday secured an impressive 3–1 (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23) victory over NAF Rockets at the ongoing 2025 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League.
The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the match was played at the indoor sports hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Sunshine Spikers dominated the opening two sets with a commanding start, winning 25–20 and 25–21 to establish a comfortable 2–0 lead.
The third set, however, saw a spirited pushback from the NAF Rockets.
Although they trailed 6–4 early on and later levelled 8–8, NAF Rockets capitalised on late errors from their opponents to take the set 25–19, narrowing the deficit.
The fourth set produced the most dramatic moments of the game. Both teams traded points fiercely, tying at 12–12, 14–14, 21–21, and 23–23.
But the young Sunshine Spikers side regained composure at the crucial moment, sealing the match 25–23 to complete a 3–1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Captain Daniel Nathaniel of the Sunshine Spikers Volleyball team praised his team’s determination and resilience.
“We fought extremely hard to secure this victory, and I’m proud of my team’s performance.
“The NAF team is well-organised ,and we had to dig deep to come out on top,” he said.
He said the team will return to strategise before their next match against the Nigerian Customs Service, a side he described as “very strong and organised.
Nathaniel also commended the organisers for what he described as a well-coordinated tournament.
“ The organisation has been top-notch. I’d rate them high, they have done an excellent job in every aspect.
“ I want to express my gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs and the Nigeria Volleyball Association for their efforts,” he said.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Olalawal Olamide , Sunshine Spikers VC and N5000 cash .
NAN reports that Sunshine Spikers will face Nigerian Customs Service on Thursday , while NAF Rockets will face NSCDC on Friday .
In other matches, CNS defeated UCEM 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17), showcasing their strength and determination.
Offa VC also secured a narrow 3-2 win against COAS (25-16, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 19-18), in a match filled with twists and turns.
In another exciting match, NPF dominated NCS 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23), highlighting their impressive skills.
NAN reports that the 2025 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League final phase commenced on Dec.1 and will run till Dec. 13 at Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng).
