Aba (Abia) Dec. 23, 2025 (NAN) Some football enthusists in Aba have hailed the Super Eagles for defeating Taifa Stars of Tanzania 2-1 in their opening match of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) taking place in Morocco.

The people spoke in different interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba, shortly after the match, on Tuesday.

According to them, Super Eagles always experienced difficulties winning their first matches in competitive football.

NAN reports that some people had earlier before the encounter expressed fear, following the team’s 2-1 loss to Egypt in their final pre-AFCON match.

A sports’ presenter with a popular radio station in the commercial city, Tony Ademodi, said the team needed to improve on goal scoring.

Ademodi said that the coach must ensure he assigned players in their rightful positions in subsequent matches.

He praised the team for winning their first match of the championship but urged them to always “kill off games with scoring chances or get ready to be punished by a more clinical team”.

Another fan, Adindu Uche, expressed dismay over the team’s inability to score more goals against Tanzania, in spite of lots of chances.

He predicted that the team would reach the knockout stage but doubted their ability to win the tournament.

Also, Amanda Obiukwu said she expected the coach to remove Victor Osimhen earlier to give room for more distribution of the ball.

Obiukwu said that the defenders were too tight on Osimhen because they knew he remained the team’s goal scorer and the players kept feeding him with the ball.

Ugochukwu Obasi said he was happy that Eagles outplayed Tanzania but warned them against complacency, pointing out that they still had tougher matches ahead.

“This is Tanzania and our next match is against Tunisia.

“So, it’s better we come up with better tactics in our game,” Obasi said.

NAN reports that Eagles will on Dec. 27 face Tunisia and battle Uganda, in the last Group C match, for a place in the knockout stage. (NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)
