Thrift collector arraigned for allegedly stealing N4.8m

Badagry (Lagos State) Dec. 22, 2025 (NAN) The Police on Monday, dragged a 30-year-old woman, Mary Towolawi, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing N4.8 million.

The defendant, a thrift collector, is standing trial on charges bordering on stealing and conversion.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, ASP. Edet Ekpo told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January 2022 and Octoner 2025, at LAPO Microfinance Bank, in Badagry, Lagos.

He alleged that while working as a thrift collector for the bank, the defendant stole money kept under her care, and converted same to her personal use.

“She was arrested and handed over to police for prosecution,” he said.

The offences contravenes the provisions of section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr A J Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum N500,000 with two sureties in the like sum.

He held that one of the sureties must be a community leader.

Layeni adjourned the case until Jan.26, 2026 for mention. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
