Abuja, Dec. 23, 2025 (NAN) The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Kayode Egbetokun has called on the newly promoted and decorated senior police officers to translate their new ranks into leadership effectiveness.
The I-G made the call on Tuesday in Abuja during the decoration of the promoted officers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one DIG, seven AIGs and 13 Commissioners of Police were decorated at the event.
According to the I-G, at this level, rank must translate into leadership effectiveness.
“Senior command requires clarity of thought, decisiveness, emotional restraint, and an appreciation of the strategic implications of operational decisions.
“You are now expected to lead systems, manage complexity, and deliver outcomes that strengthen public safety and institutional credibility,” he said.
Egbetokun said promotion within the Nigeria Police Force was not a routine administrative exercise, but a deliberate institutional decision grounded in service, record, leadership, capacity, and demonstrated readiness for higher responsibility.
According to him, having sat across multiple levels of command, I am keenly aware that elevation to senior rank signifies far more than the wearing of new ranks.
He said the officers decorated have distinguished themselves through years of consistent service, operational exposure, and adherence to professional standards.
“Their progression has been shaped by postings across diverse commands and security environments, each demanding sound judgment, resilience, and leadership maturity,” he said.
He said the promotion was the outcome of careful assessment and additional confidence in the capacity of the senior officers to discharge higher command responsibilities.
According to him, this ceremony affirms the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to merit-based progression and officer welfare.
He said transparent and credible promotion processes motivate performance, stabilise command structures, and enhance organisational morale.
Egbetokun said the Nigeria Police Force would continue to protect integrity of the system as a core institutional value, adding that higher rank comes with increased visibility and scrutiny.
He urged the senior officers to always demonstrate competence, not only in operations but also in stakeholder engagement, inter-agency coordination, and community relations.
The I-G congratulated the newly decorated senior officers and added that modern policing demands leadership that is professional, collaborative, and responsive to public expectations. (NAN)
